How to Use a Court Squeegee on Wet Pickleball Courts

Anyone who plays outdoor pickleball in the Pacific Northwest, the Midwest, or basically anywhere with regular rain has dealt with the dilemma of arriving at a court and finding standing water on the surface. A court squeegee can turn a wet court into a playable one in about ten minutes if the conditions are right. Some days it is the difference between getting a session in and going home.

This guide walks through what to buy, how to use one properly, and when a squeegee will not save you no matter how hard you push it.

What You Need

A proper court squeegee is different from a window squeegee or a garage floor squeegee. Court squeegees have a wider blade, usually 24 to 36 inches across, and a long handle that lets you push standing water without bending over. The blade is usually a soft rubber or foam rather than the hard rubber on garage versions.

The two main types are roller squeegees and straight blade squeegees. Roller squeegees use a foam-covered cylinder that absorbs water as it rolls. They work well on lightly damp courts but cannot move heavy standing water as efficiently. Straight blade squeegees push water directly off the court surface and handle larger volumes faster.

Most public outdoor pickleball venues that get regular rain have squeegees on site, sometimes mounted to a wall near the courts or stored in a small shed. Bringing your own is mostly necessary if you play at venues without amenities or if you want to be the person who can get a session started after a rain.

Step 1: Assess the Court

Before you start pushing water, walk the court and look at what you are dealing with. Light surface moisture from a recent shower will dry on its own within twenty to thirty minutes on a warm day. Squeegeeing wet courts in this state is mostly unnecessary and can leave streaks that take longer to evaporate than untouched moisture would.

Standing water in low spots, puddles along the baseline, or a fully soaked surface are situations where a squeegee actually helps. If the court has visible puddles, those need to be moved before the surface will dry to a playable condition.

Step 2: Push Water Toward Drainage

Most outdoor courts are built with a slight pitch that drains water toward one side or corner. Look for where natural drainage occurs and push water in that direction. Pushing water uphill or in random directions creates more work and tends to leave residual moisture behind.

Start at the highest point on the court and work toward the lowest. For a court that drains toward one sideline, that means starting at the opposite sideline and pushing water across the playing area in long even strokes.

Step 3: Use Long Continuous Strokes

Short choppy strokes leave streaks of water behind and require you to come back over the same area multiple times. Long continuous strokes that span the entire width of the court are more efficient and dry the surface more evenly.

Apply moderate downward pressure on the handle. Pressing too hard does not move more water and tires you out faster. Pressing too lightly leaves a thin film of water behind that has to evaporate anyway.

Step 4: Work the Kitchen and Service Boxes Last

The kitchen and the service boxes are where most of the action happens during play. These areas need to be the driest before you start a session. Save them for last so that any water you push from other parts of the court does not end up sitting in these zones.

If the squeegee leaves residual streaks in the playing zones, a few additional passes with light pressure usually clear them up. Acrylic court surfaces tend to dry faster than concrete or asphalt because the texture is finer.

Step 5: Test the Surface Before Playing

Walk the court and feel for slippery spots before warming up. A squeegeed court that looks dry can still have residual moisture on the surface that affects footing. Sliding a shoe across the surface should produce normal friction, not a slick low-resistance feel.

Pickleballs also behave differently on damp courts even after squeegeeing. The bounce stays slightly lower and the ball can pick up moisture that makes it harder to grip on serves and dinks. A few practice serves and dinks before starting an actual game lets you adjust for the conditions.

When a Squeegee Will Not Save You

Active rainfall is the obvious one. Squeegeeing in the rain just moves water around as more comes down. You have to wait for the rain to stop before any drying effort makes sense.

Heavily textured courts with rough surfaces hold moisture in the texture itself and require more time to dry even after the surface water is removed. Some older asphalt courts have so much surface roughness that squeegeeing is a partial measure at best.

Cold damp conditions slow evaporation significantly. A squeegeed court in 45-degree weather with high humidity may still be too damp to play safely.
